Stop violence against domestic help

Wednesday, 19 February 2014

The media often reports on domestic helps being brutally tortured by their employers. Only a few such incidents come out as the headlines of news and most of the incidents always remain in the dark. Most of the offenders are from educated and well-to-do families. Sometimes, I cannot believe that these people can show such inhuman behaviours with children who work for their families for meagre money and food.
The media should regularly publish the follow-up stories of such crimes and make sure that the perpetrators face punishment for their heinous crime. Only exemplary punishment can deter them. The law should also make sure that the victims are adequately compensated by the perpetrators. Abject poverty is the reason for the poor parents who are compelled to send their children to work when they should have ensured education for their children.
It is our duty to ensure that all of our children get the opportunity for education and safe childhood. I hope the government and the media will play important roles to create awareness among common people to treat their domestic help sympathetically so that we don't see the ghastly image of any domestic help in the media. We should remember a golden quote, "The measure of a civilisation is how it treats its weakest members"
