\\\'Stop violence against women at root level\\\'
Friday, 28 November 2014
Politicians will have to play a more active role in preventing violence against women at the root level. Speakers came up with the view at a seminar in the city on Thursday. They observed that transforming society’s outlook towards women can contribute significantly to preventing the social ill. They also stressed proper implementation of various laws, including the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act 2000, the Dowry Prohibition Act 1980, the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2010 and the Acid Crime Control Act 2002. Addressing the seminar, Rebecca Momin, chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, said all sections of society have to work together to stop violence against women. Speaking as the special guest, she urged everyone to change their mindsets to eliminate the roots of the vice. Talking as another special guest, member of parliament (MP) Mahbub Ara Gini pointed out that not just men, women themselves are also involved in violence against women in our society. Therefore the mindsets of both men and women in our society must undergo change. Otherwise violence against women cannot be prevented, she observed. Chaired by BNPS executive director Rokeya Kabir, the seminar was also addressed by UN Women programme coordinator (Violence Against Women) Mahtabul Hakim, according to a news agency.
