Stop visiting quacks

Saturday, 2 September 2023

Receiving healthcare services is not easy in rural Bangladesh. The government hospitals there do not have enough facilities. Also, the number of hospitals and upazila health complexes is much too inadequate. Moreover, most of our rural people have superstitious beliefs. So, they go to quacks and risk their lives. These self-styled physicians with little learning of medical science, who are in most cases drug store owners, prescribe village people antibiotics for quick relief from their illness. The patients may recover or even develop complications. In case of quick recovery, the quacks become famous in the area.
Many people pay visit to such quacks for quick recovery but they are not aware of the danger ahead. Misuse of antibiotics can lead some strains of bacteria to become antibiotic-resistant. If this happens, these resistant bacteria cannot be treated by traditional treatment. So, we request the authorities concerned to look into this problem and take steps so that no one except registered doctors can prescribe medicine to anyone.
