Stopping road accidents

Tuesday, 9 February 2010

A road accident caused the death of a child the other day. He was the only son of his parents. A bus ran him over when he and his mother were crossing the road.
Accidents like these have become a regular affair. Even with the traffic literally crawling at many places at most hours of the day, reckless drivers run their vehicles, from motorcycles to buses, with little regard as to what their recklessness can cause.
And we all know that no matter how bad the situation, most of these accidents can be avoided if the traffic police are able to act decisively and bring these criminals to book and the law deals with them severely if their guilt is proven.
Most traffic policemen one sees on the road are doing their best to control the traffic. We are also told that the traffic department is seriously understaffed if we take into account the number of vehicles on the road as well as the number of roads, streets and lanes. But will only the boost in manpower do it? The answer is no.
The drivers who ply their vehicles recklessly and cause accidents must be forced to understand that they cannot get away with it and shall have to pay very dearly for their actions. Only then will we see anarchy on the road disappearing.
