Stranded Bhola gas to be used in three years

FE REPORT | Friday, 26 January 2024

Stranded gas from Bhola would be supplied to mainland through pipelines in the next three years, said state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid on Thursday.
Bhola is a natural gas-rich area of the country.
The government has made a move to drill nine new exploratory wells on the island of Bhola.
Mr Hamid said this while visiting Shahbazpur gas field in Bhola.
The government will strengthen oil and gas exploration activities to ramp up domestic natural gas output.
State-run Petrobangla has taken initiatives to drill 46 new wells to add around 612 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas to the national grid, he said.
Some 112 mmcfd of gas has already been added to the grid, according to Mr Hamid.
Currently, an estimated 5.0 mmcfd of gas is being supplied in compressed natural gas (CNG) form to Gazipur and Bhaluka industries.
The volume of gas will be augmented to 25 mmcfd of gas in phases.
According to sources, the three gas fields in Bhola have the total capacity to produce around 200 mmcfd.
However, the output is limited to 70 mmcfd due to a dearth of consumers there.
More or less 120 mmcfd of surplus gas now remains unused and stranded in Shahbazpur, Bhola and Ilisha gas fields.
