FE Report
The government, in collaboration with the European Commission (EC), is preparing a strategic plan for promotion of six export-oriented sectors.
"We are planning to launch projects for boosting export from the sectors," Md Khalilur Rahman, director general of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), told the FE Monday.
The sectors are information and communication technology, light engineering, herbal medicine, horticulture, agro-processed foods and packaging industry.
Rahman said the strategic plan is being prepared under an agreement between the External Resources Division (ERD) and the EC at a cost of Tk176 million.
Of the total cost, he said, the EC is providing Tk160 million as grant while the Bangladesh government will bear the remaining cost.
Apart from this, Rahman said, the International Trade Centre (ITC), based in Geneva, is extending technical support for preparation of the strategic plan.
The ITC has already supported the EPB with logistics and appointment of consultants, he said.
When asked, Rahman said, the strategic plan will be submitted to the EPB by December this year.
He said the strategic plan will be sent to the ministry concerned for submission at the council of advisors for approval.
Rahman said the plan aims at expanding the country's export basket.
The strategic plan will outline measures to address the problems facing the sectors and assess the international market demand for the products, he said.
The projects might be launched at the beginning of the next fiscal year, he added.
Rahman said the implementation of the projects will help the government implement its 'one district one product' programme.
