Strawberry cultivation gains ground in Northern region

NILPHAMARI, Mar 29: Commercial cultivation of strawberry is gradually gaining pace in the Northern region of the country as the taste and fragrance of the juicy fruit matches the one harvested abroad.
Enthusiastic growers of Nilphamari, Joypurhat, Dinajpur and Panchagarh districts have earned hefty profit by growing the fruit in their orchards.
Zillur Rahman brothers, residents of Ruknidipur union of Akkelpur Upazala in Joypurhat district cultivated strawberry in two acres of land, Shamsul Hoq Mondal of Dinajpur district brought one acre of land under strawberry cultivation, Ataur Rahman of Saidpur pourosova cultivated one bigha of land and farmers of Salbahan of Tentulia Upazila in Panchagarh district grew strawberry in 17 acres of land.
The new variety of strawberry yielded 30 maunds from 30 decimal of land and fetched a minimum price of Tk 500 per kg.
