Strawberry cultivation hints prospect in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, April 12: Strawberry is being commercially cultivated in nearly 80 acres of land in Panchagarh district. This has created employment opportunities to a large number of people. The delicious foreign fruit is also being shipped to other parts of the country.
The largest strawberry farm in of the district is situated in Tentulia Upazila. Four friends of Lohakace union of the upazila set up the Everest Strawberry Farm.
The strawberries produced at the farm are large in size and good to taste and smell. They are being sold at Tk 700 to 800 per kilogramme. The farm has set a target of producing 60 tonnes of strawberry with the sale target of about Tk 30 million.
The Everest Farm was established with the help of the Botany Department of Rajshahi University where Rabi-3 variety of Strawberry had been evolved. The farm was set up on 17 acres of leased land at a cost of about Tk 5.6 million.
The strawberry produced in Panchagarh is very tasty and juicy. The soil and weather of the district are favourable for strawberry cultivation. A nursery named Golden Seed Farm is supplying seeds to spread strawberry cultivation in Panchagarh district.
