Strawberry farming getting popular in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Mar 8: Strawberry cultivation is getting popular in 8 districts under Rangpur division and its growers are making handsome profit by cultivating this high-value delicious fruit.
According to sources, Bangladesh Strawberry Association launched strawberry research and cultivation activities involving various seed farm and nurseries in recent years that quickly popularised its farming.
Many farmers have cultivated strawberry and have already begun its early harvest in Rangpur, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Panchagarh districts.
Many others have also cultivated the fruit at their homesteads and also on their roof tops using the tubs in the region.
Local people said that commercial basis strawberry farming is fast becoming popular in some parts of the region.
Md. Bappy, a successful grower at Jahaz Company Mor Area in Rangpur town told the Financial Express that he has been cultivating strawberry on his rooftop using tubs for few years. Besides home consumption he is also earning good profit from this crop, he added.
Horticulturist Mezbahul Islam said that the soil, climate and topographic conditions of the region are very much suitable for strawberry cultivation.
Optimum use of land stressed
BSS reports from Rangpur: Speakers at a ceremony here Wednesday stressed mass adoption of the latest agri-technologies with optimum use of cultivable land to ensure the country's food security through increased crop productions.
There is no alternative to ensuring optimum use of cultivable land and use of cost-saving technologies as arable land area are reducing continuously and climate change creates grave concern for agriculture sector in the country, speakers said.
They were addressing inaugural ceremony of five-day Agriculture and Technology Fair- 2012 organised jointly by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Animal Husbandry and Livestock Department on Mithapukur upazila parishad premises.
Mithapukur upazila chairman Zakir Hossain Sarker formally inaugurated the fair as the chief guest with Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Abu Horaira in the chair.
Mithapukur upazila vice-chairmen Abdul Halim Mandal and Moududa Akhter, Upazila Agriculture Officer Dr Sarwarul Haque, Upazila Livestock Officer Nazmul Haque and a number of farmers, Addressed the meeting.
