FARIDPUR Apr 18 (UNB): At least seven people, including a policeman, were injured by stray bullets at Awami League (AL) presidium member Kazi Zafarullah's street rally at Kawlibera village in Bhanga Upazila on Saturday morning.
Officer-in-charge of Bhanga Police Station Nazmul Islam said stray bullets from the shot gun of district AL leader Dipak Majumdar's bodyguard struck seven people, including a policeman, while they were attending the street rally of the party's presidium member Kazi Zafarullah at about 8:30 am, leaving them injured. Of the injured, two were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition while five others received first aid. Nezarat Deputy Collector Robayet Hayat Shiplu confirmed the incident.
According to bdnews24.com, the shot fired at a rally of Awami League Presidium Member Kazi Zafarullah in Faridpur's Bhanga was not an accident as claimed by police, a local Juba League leader has said. The president of the committee of a local market also made similar observation.
Bhanga Juba League Organising Secretary Mamun Sheikh said the shot was fired on Saturday following a dispute over inaugurating a bridge at Munshibari in Kaulibera.
Munshibazar Shop Owners Association President Ali Hossain said local MP Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury Nixon had inaugurated the bridge a week ago. "Kazi Zafarullah came to inaugurate the bridge again today (Saturday) and hold a rally. There was some dispute with the locals over the matter. A shot was heard afterwards," he said.
