Strengthening anti-smuggling operations
Friday, 3 April 2009
THE new government has come to power with fresh enthusiasm or seemingly real determination to improve things in all spheres. It should prove its commitments by strengthening the anti-smuggling operations to retain the resources within the country and protecting the economy and thousands of local enterprises from dumping and undue competition from smuggled products. Effective anti-smuggling operations are essential to boost the national economy.
BDR and RAB need to be well equipped and provided with helicopters to check smuggling. The government should provide all this. But for good results the two forces need proper motivation to stamp out the scourge of smuggling. Other countries with much bigger and easily penetrable borders are successfully countering or limiting smuggling. There can be no excuse for Bangladesh not to be able to check smuggling.
