Strengthening of emergency relief activities urged

The government's coordination cell has recommended for strengthening the current emergency relief and rehabilitation activities in the Sidr-hit districts, especially the worst affected areas.
It also suggested continuation of seed and fertiliser distribution among the cyclone-affected farmers and disbursement of loans on easy terms to the middle-class families to help them return to normal life.
Head of the Relief Coordination Cell and Communication Adviser M A Matin made the recommendations Wednesday while giving a presentation on the ongoing relief and rehabilitation activities at a special meeting of the council of advisers.
Chaired by the Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, the meeting was held at his office in the city, said an official handout.
In his presentation, the communication adviser also recommended for suspension of felling tree in the Sidr-hit Sundarbans for at least two years.
He, however, stressed the need for modernising both Khulna and Barisal stations of Bangladesh Betar (radio) so that they can carry awareness programme for the people with regard to natural disaster.
The Coordination Cell recommended for introducing community radio services in the coastal regions and also emphasised the need for making the disaster-related signals easier and simple for the people.
The meeting was told that a sum of Tk 1.65 billion had already been sanctioned for reconstruction of houses in the Sidr-hit districts, the handout added.
Meanwhile, the caretaker government set up November 24 last the coordination cell in Barisal to effectively carry out its emergency relief and rehabilitation activities in all the cyclone-hit coastal districts.
