Strengthening RAB as a vital force

Wednesday, 23 June 2010

Since its inception, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) as otherwise earned some appreciation for its relentless drives against serious crimes and their perpetrators. It has turned out to be a refreshing and useful force to contain crimes and criminality when ordinary policing has been failing to cope with the crime surge.
But RAB also its ups and downs. After doing some commendable work during its teething period, its operational performance was criticised for declining. This allegation is still made. But on the whole, RAB's contribution towards maintaining law and order in recent times continues to be a very significant one. Therefore, there can be no questioning about its effectiveness and the need to allow it to do its work without any frustration. Only the RAB hierarchy needs to investigate into recent charges made about some of its members allegedly being involved in kidnapping persons by using their authority and then killing them.
Other cases of law breaking by RAB have been noted by different quarters. After a thorough investigation into these allegations and flushing its ranks completely clean of such offenders, RAB should only emerge as a reliable and potent organisation against crimes. But the current accusations against RAB ought not, however, to be allowed to create the ground for the dismantling of this organisation as such. Any such move would be supreme folly.
