Strict enforcement of existing electoral laws stressed

Speakers at a roundtable discussion in the city Monday called for making the existing laws effective to hold the upcoming general elections in a free and fair manner.
Citizens Initiatives For Good Governance (SHUJAN) organised the discussion on "Proposals for Election Commission Reforms", reports BSS.
Vice-president of the organisation Justice Quazi Ebadul Haq presided over the meeting.
Among others, Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) Chairman Muzaffar Ahmed, former caretaker government adviser ASM Shahjahan, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Manzurul Ahsan Khan, former lawmakers GM Quader and Rahmat Ali, journalist Syed Abul Maksud, Amin Ahmed Chowdhury, Jafrullah Chowdhury, M Jahangir and Asaduzzaman spoke on the occasion.
Badiul Alam Majumder presented the keynote paper at the discussion meeting.
In his address, Muzaffar Ahmed said the nation wants to see an accountable and transparent government in the country to be elected through a credible election in future.
He said the national election and local elections should not be held simultaneously because it may create inconveniences to the people.
Former adviser ASM Shahjahan said apart from the electoral process there should have some reforms in the election. He stressed the need for bringing accountability and transparency in the Election Commission.
GM Quader said the existing election laws should be enforced strictly to ensure a free and fair election in the country.
