CHITTAGONG, Mar 16: Loading and unloading of cargo from 18 mother vessels at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port remained suspended till Tuesday night due to workers' strike.
The strike, called by the Water Transport Workers' Federation Monday midnight as part of a nationwide programme, partially disrupted berthing of vessels at the port although loading, unloading and transportation of cargo from the port jetties remained operational. The mother vessels affected by the industrial action, include three crude oil tankers, two carrying clinkers, two loaded with fertiliser, one with foodgrains and 10 other vessels carrying general cargo.
The demurrage payable due to overstay of vessels will be US$1.8 million per day at the rate of $ 10,000 each.
At least seven hundred lighter vessels remain moored at Bangla Bazar, Sadarghat and other adjoining areas on the river Karnaphuli causing immense loss to the national economy, the lighter ship owners said.
Thousands of workers staged day-long demonstrations at Bangla Bazar and Sadarghat areas demanding a new pay scale and enhanced allowances under the banner of the federation.
