No classes were held at Dhaka University (DU) Sunday, as Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) enforced a strike protesting countrywide terrorism and extortion by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and the killing of DU student Abu Bakar.
JCD leaders and activists held a rally in support of the strike at Shahbagh in the morning, as they couldn't enter the campus due to interception police.
The JCD leaders threatened to go for tougher movement, if BCL doesn't stop its terrorist activities immediately at the country's educational institutions.
The pro-BNP student organisation also demanded resignation of DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique for his patronisation of BCL and failure to ensure congenial educational atmosphere at the university.
When asked, fourth-year Bangla Department student Jahid Hasan said, "I support today's strike protesting the killing Abu Bakar." Like Hasan, most of the general students paid their silent support to the strike Sunday.
BCL leaders and activists also brought out a procession on the campus at noon rejecting the JCD-called strike and demanding fair trial of the killing of F Rahman Hall student Abu Bakar.
Abu Bakar, a third-year Islamic History and Culture Department student of DU, succumbed to his injury February 3. He was critically injured during clash between two factions of BCL F Rahman Hall unit early February 2.
