Striking BIRDEM doctors postpone work abstention

Friday, 29 June 2007

Activities at the BIRDEM hospital came back to normal as the striking indoor doctors Thursday postponed their nonstop work abstention till June 30 (Saturday) awaiting a negotiated solution of their problem, reports UNB.
Sources said the physicians, whose agitation created a crisis at the specialized hospital for diabetic patients, joined their duties after getting an assurance of settling the issues, the main one being the regularization of their jobs.
The assurance came from a team of professors led by its Clinical Director and head of Pediatric Department Prof. Nazmun Nahar and head of Eye Department Prof. Sheikh Mannaf, who is mediating between the two sides.
The negotiating team assured the doctors that the demands of renewal of their contract and making their job permanent would be met Saturday. On the day, (Saturday) a meeting of the national council of the diabetic association would be held at its auditorium for resolving the crisis.
Asked what if any positive decision didn't come from the meeting, the mediation team replied: "Then we will express solidarity with the agitating doctors and also go for demonstrations to realize the demands."
On June 28, around 300 physicians of the hospital, appointed on three-year contract, went on nonstop work-stoppage following a notification from the authority that the contract of the indoor medical officers who have already completed the stipulated three years could not be renewed.
