Strong local govt vital for true democracy: Iftekhar
Tuesday, 1 July 2008
Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said a strong local government was an imperative for true and genuine democracy, reports UNB.
"Governance must be taken to the doorstep of the people, and the only way to do that in modern times is to strengthen and empower local government. This will benefit the common people," he said.
Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, also a member of the group of five Advisers holding dialogues with political parties with the caretaker government, was talking to the media Monday about the caretaker government's position on holding local elections prior to parliamentary polls.
"It'll entail a change of mindset and political culture, but this change will not only be a positive one but also necessary and the time for this has surely come," he added.
