Student brawl halts CU academic activities
Tuesday, 11 November 2014
Academic activities at Chittagong University (CU) were halted on Monday following a feud between two factions of students. Campus sources said agitating activists of Varsity Xpress (VX), a university shuttle train compartment based student group, stopped the shuttle train service and locked the main entrance of the university in the morning. The classes and pre-scheduled examinations were not held on November 10 as the buses and shuttle trains carrying non-resident teachers and students could not reach the campus. Earlier, the agitation on campus ensued after the supporters of ‘Choose Friends with Care (CFC)’ allegedly attacked two supporters of VX group on the campus around 3:00pm on Sunday. Demanding punishment to the attackers, the agitating supporters of VX group blocked the operations of all the three shuttle trains in the port city’s Sholoshohor Rail Station around 7:30am on Monday and locked the CU gates around 11:15am. The university authority expelled two students for their alleged involvement in the attack on VX supporters and formed a 2-member committee to probe the incident, said CU proctor Siraj-Ud-Doullah, according to a news agency.
