Student protesters burn effigy of Mainul on DU campus

Wednesday, 25 July 2007

Some student protesters Tuesday brought out a procession near Kuwait Moitree Hall of the Dhaka University and burned an effigy of Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and Information Mainul Hosein, reports UNB.
Campus sources said the protesters staged the brief demonstration at about 10:30 am and left the spot quickly. Processions or pickets are banned under the Emergency Rules now in force in the country.
The sources said the protesters belonged to Awami League (AL)-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
They chanted slogans demanding immediate release of AL President Sheikh Hasina and resignation of Adviser Mainul Hosein. The students staged the demonstration within 48 hours of class boycott programme enforced by the Dhaka University Teachers Association in protest against the arrest of Sheikh Hasina and harassment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia as well as to press for the resignation of the Law Adviser.
