The central student unions of the Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University and Jagannath University have jointly announced a series of mass gatherings in the divisional cities in support of "Yes" vote in the upcoming referendum.
The announcement was made at a press conference, held in front of the DUCSU Office at the Dhaka University on Wednesday. DUCSU General Secretary S M Forhad formally declared the programme.
He said the first mass gathering would be held in Sylhet city today (29 January). Similar programmes will be organised gradually in all divisional cities across the country.
According to the organisers, the gatherings would be attended by elected student representatives from the DUCSU, JUCSU, RUCSU, CUCSU and JnUCSU. In addition, members of the families of the July martyrs and injured fighters, mosque imams, temple priests, presidents of business associations and press clubs, labour leaders, representatives of the Shilpakala Academy and sports organisations, as well as professionals including teachers and doctors, would also participate.
S M Forhad said, "Through these mass gatherings, we want to call upon people from all walks of life to take a position in favour of 'Yes' in the referendum in a peaceful, democratic and inclusive manner. This historic decision of state-building must be taken by the people themselves."
Leaders of the five university student unions were present at the press conference. They called upon students and people across the country, regardless of their political affiliations, to participate spontaneously and help make the programme a success.
