Progressive Students' Alliance, a coalition of five left-leaning student organisations called upon the authorities of the public universities not to enhance the students' fees to facilitate the poor but meritorious students pursue higher education.
Recently, some of the country's 26 public universities including the universities of Dhaka and Khulna have decided to increase the fees for admission and examination by twofold and more in some cases.
"We ask the university authorities not to take the foolhardy decision like enhancing students' fees that would shatter the dreams of the poor but meritorious students to attain higher education, as most of the students of the public universities come from lower and middle class families", the students' alliance said at a press conference at Dhaka University Wednesday.
Leaders of the platform also placed a series of demand on the occasion. The demands include bringing the price of essentials under the purchasing power of people, supply of agriculture materials with the state initiative and management alongside mitigating the fertiliser crisis and trial of war criminals.
