Dhaka University (DU) students Saturday demanded removal of Home Minister Shahara Khatun for irresponsible remarks on the killing of DU student Abu Bakar Siddique.
They protested the home minister's remarks and urged her to resign seeking apology to the nation for her absurd comments about the death of Abu Bakar.
Hundreds of DU students joined a protest procession in this connection on the campus Saturday demanding resignation of the home minister and fair trial of the killing.
Shahara Khatun Thursday told journalists that the killing of DU student was an isolated and usual incident. She also said, "it doesn't matter rather what the government is doing matters."
The aggrieved DU students at rally after the procession said such remarks would instigate the ruling party's student wing BCL to continue its terrorist activities on the campuses.
Progressive Students' Alliance (PSA), a coalition of several left-leaning student organisations also demonstrated on the campus demanding removal of the home minister.
On the other hand, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has called a strike at Dhaka University (DU) today (Sunday) protesting terrorism, extortion and occupation at the country's educational institutions by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
"We have called for the strike in protest against countrywide terrorism, extortion and occupation by the BCL leaders and activists and the killing of DU student Abu Bakar," JCD General Secretary Amirul Islam Khan Alim said.
We also demand immediate resignation of DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique for his patronisation to BCL and failure to ensure congenial atmosphere of education on the DU campus, the general secretary added.
Abu Bakar, a third-year History Department student of DU, succumbed to his injury February 3. Bakar was critically injured during a clash between two groups of BCL F Rahman Hall unit February 1.
Meanwhile, the DU Syndicate-formed nine-member investigation committee, headed by DU Pro-VC Harun-or-Rashid, started its investigation about the killing of Abu Bakar Saturday, two days after formation of the committee.
