Students of Dhaka University once again burst into demonstration on the campus Wednesday as the authorities have doubled the examination and semester fees of students without any prior declaration.
Over two thousand students, who have come under the semester system introduced for the first time for the session 2006-07, brought out the demonstration and submitted a memorandum to the DU vice-chancellor demanding reduction of the fees that had been increased.
According to the notices issued in different department offices, a student has to pay Tk 250 for each course amounting the total to Tk 1000 to Tk 1,250 as the examination fee for four or five courses in a semester (6 months) and Tk 2,500 to Tk 4000 for the promotion to another year.
Earlier, students under the traditional system had to pay Tk only 250 to 300 as yearly examination fee and Tk 2,000 to 2,500 for upgradation to another year.
When contacted, the acting dean of social sciences faculty AAMS Arefin Siddique told the FE that they (all deans and department chairmen of DU) would sit together at 11 am today (Thursday) to reconsider the demand of the disgruntled students.
"No one wants to create financial pressure on students. So you don't have any reason to be worried about the increase of examination and semester fees", DU VC SMA Faiz told the agitated students when they met him in his office and submitted the memorandum regarding their demand.
Faiz also assured the students of reconsideration of their demand with utmost importance.
On the other hand, sources close to the detective branches of police said that the sudden increase in students' examination and other incidental fees point to make the campus instable and violent again by infuriating the students about the issue.
