RANGPUR, Mar 17: The students of Nehar Government Primary School in Badarganj municipality area of the district have been attending classes under the open sky for the last few months as the school building was declared abandoned after it developed cracks.
Sources said the school was founded in 1968 and it was reconstructed in 1994. But presently it has become vulnerable owing to lack of any repair work. Cracks developed in its roof, beams, walls and floors. Plasters from roof, walls and pillars of most of the rooms are flaking off, posing serious risk for both the teachers and students.
According to school sources, the students could not give attention to their lessons as plaster often came off from the ceiling and on many occasions the students and teachers narrowly escaped accident. Finding no other alternative   the authorities had to declare the rooms abandoned and started taking classes under the open sky.
Every year, a good number of students from this institution get scholarship but their studies are seriously being hindered due to a lack of classrooms, teachers added.
Rustom, a student of class three said they cannot concentrate on their lesson as the classes are taken under the open sky.
Locals alleged that substandard construction materials were used to construct the school building which is the main reason for the dilapidated condition of the institution.
Some of the guardians expressed disappointment over the situation as it is severely hampering their children's studies.
With the onset of monsoon their classes would be interrupted severely by rain, they apprehended.
The president of school committee Zahidul Haque said earlier they urged the authorities concerned to construct some new rooms but they did not take any measures regarding the matter, he further said.
