Cleanliness campaign

Students steal the show

FE REPORT | Thursday, 8 August 2024

Student volunteers continued to control traffic and sweep filth in Dhaka city on Wednesday as things are yet to return to normal following recent violence countrywide.
They also facilitated a move to return bits and bobs and other valuables an agitated mob took from the Gonobhaban, the Prime Minister's Office and the National Parliament on August 05.
People from all walks of life welcomed this gesture and cooperated with the students who led an anti-government movement only recently.
In the absence of cops from police stations and traffic controls since last Monday, students extended their hands to cleanliness and traffic controls.
Several hundred students from different educational institutions were cleaning garbage from National Parliament and Gonobhaban premises where protesters ran amok following Sheikh Hasina's downfall as premier.
The mob vandalised valuables and also snatched away different artefacts from such key-point installations.
A student volunteer near the Gonobhaban said their effort to bring holistic reforms across the country has kicked off.
"Until the law-and-order situation becomes normal and government organisations resume operations, we will continue with our voluntary service," he added.
The volunteers were also helping members of the Bangladesh Ansar and VDP who were deployed in place of the police who have gone on strike.
Students were seen controlling traffic and cleaning things in areas like TSC, ECB Square, Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-12, Karwanbazar and Paltan in the scorching heat. Bus, private car, motorbike and other vehicles were seen following the direction of students and welcoming their efforts to keep traffic in order.
Students from different private universities in Aftabnagar, Badda and Natunbazar areas took part in such voluntary work like elsewhere in the capital.
In many places, onlookers offered the volunteer helpers bottled water and snacks to express their gratitude and solidarity with them.
However, the newly appointed police chief, Moinul Islam, ordered all cops on Wednesday to report to their respective workplaces by the evening of August 08.
Praying for the forgiveness of the departed souls of the students and the police who were killed, Mr Islam said every killing would be investigated properly.
Alongside restoring order in the police force, the IGP urged his colleagues to play a role in protecting the lives and property of the people.
Furthermore, internal security of all police stations across the country and Dhaka's traffic has been given to the Ansar battalion.
At the same time, they have also been given the onus of ensuring security of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Meanwhile, the Passenger Welfare Association in a statement said after a big student movement demanding road safety in 2018, the Awami League government accepted all their demands but did not fulfill later.
"It is, therefore, imperative to include the demands of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement regarding zero tolerance to irregularities and corruption on roads."
