Success of 1/11 to go in vain if polls not held in time: Zillur
Saturday, 18 October 2008
Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Friday said a deep conspiracy was going on to foil the December 18 general election, reports UNB.
He also voiced concern saying that the achievements of the 1/11 political changeover would go in vain if the elections were not held in time.
Zillur made the remarks when Jubo League leaders, led by its recently released general secretary Mirza Azam, came to meet him at his Gulshan residence.
Zillur said holding of the December 18 elections was a must to uphold the achievements of the government and the political parties in the last two years.
Asked why AL was doubtful about the parliamentary polls despite repeated assurances from the government, Zillur referred to the meeting of Jamaat with Advisers in the Chief Adviser's (CA) office.
He said that the government could not be trusted as its CA did not hesitate to have a meeting with such a person who was wanted by the police and shown fugitive in police reports.
Zillur said the December 18 elections could not be deferred under any circumstances and the release of Sheikh Hasina was a must to hold the elections in a free and fair manner.
About the much-talked-about grand alliance, he said the formation of the grand coalition would be okayed after party chief Sheikh Hasina's return from the United States.
