Successful heart surgery in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka

A rare cosmetic heart surgery was successfully performed for the first time in Bangladesh in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka for closure and repair of Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) of heart, said an Apollo release Sunday. The release also said the advantage of the advanced treatment is early recovery and less chance of sternal wound complications. Further, the reason for its acceptability is the small scar on right chest which is not even noticeable especially for the ladies. ASD is a common congenital cardiac defect usually present in older children or in adulthood especially in women on pregnancy. Conventionally it used to be closed by surgery and through midline incision and sternotomy. Now the technology has evolved to do it by small right chest incision known as minimally invasive or cosmetic procedure with equal safety. A team led by Dr Md Quamrul Islam Talukder performed the cosmetic cardiac surgery which is being practised in Western world with good result especially for ASD and valve repair or replacement, the release added. Dr Islam, who did his clinical fellowship at Mayo Clinic, USA for three years, attained the expertise. Such cosmetic heart surgery will eventually replace the era of having frightening big scar of open heart surgery, said Dr Talukder.
