Sudden closure of BTML throws workers into waters

JESSORE, Jan 8: About 550 labourers who were working on daily basis are now living in inhuman conditions after loosing their jobs in December 29, 2011 after the authority of government-owned Bengal Textile Mills Limited at Nawapara industrial town closed the mills.
Talking to journalists Ratan Shutradhar, in-charge of Eastern Yarn Company Ltd, said "cotton worth around Tk 10 crore was left unsold for which the company closed its activities at the mills."
Ansar Uddin, general manager of the mills said, "The authority was looking for another company to run the mills. It was the second unit of the mills."
Baby and Maina, two divorced women said, "We worked at this mill which was only income of source for maintaining family. But now we are facing problems to maintain the family." Azizur Rahman, a labourer, also expressed the same view. "I have to suffer a lot after losing my job," he said.
