Monday, 24 August 2015
A 200-metre portion of area in Padma Bridge project site was devoured by Padma River at Mawa point in Munshiganj district on Sunday night. Witnesses said the mighty Padma ate up area – 200 metres in length and 50 metres in width – near the bridge construction yard at Kumarbhog of Mawa point around 11:30pm due to strong currents in the river. One jetty, one walkway to the jetty and a temporary plant at the yard also went into the river with the erosion. Necessary measures were taken to check the erosion with huge bamboos and sand sacks. Munshiganj deputy commissioner M Saiful Hasan Badal said directives have been given to take proper steps in this regard. Meanwhile, general manager of China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd, contracting firm of the Padma Bridge project, has started for the project site from China to visit the spot. Earlier on June 27, massive erosion started in the Padma which devoured some 100 metres long and 50 metres wide area, one kilometre behind the Padma Bridge project, at Kumarbhog of Mawa point, according to a news agency.
