Monday, 7 September 2009
Setting up of sufficient number of cold storages near coastal areas and rivers where fishermen can store their catch will ensure availability of quality Hilsa in the markets, according to a study of Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU), reports BSS.
The study styled 'Value Chain Analysis for Hilsa Marketing in Coastal Bangladesh' was conducted in Patuakhali district, a coastal area of the Bay of Bengal, located in the southern part of the country.
Three types of fish markets - primary, secondary and consumer - were selected for the study that was carried out recently to examine how the prices vary in the markets.
Associate Professor of Department of Fisheries Management at the BAU, Dr Nesar Ahmed, who conducted the study, tried to examine Hilsa marketing systems with value chain analysis where Dhaka city retail markets were selected to examine the price variation.
