Sugar price maintains upward trend

Price of sugar maintained an upward trend in the city's local markets marking about 25 per cent rise in a week.
Besides prices of pulse, rice and potato were up while other essential commodities including onion, edible oil, vegetables and fish were the same during the last week.
Hilsha price was the same in the city's retail market. A pair of medium-sized hilsha was selling at Tk 1000- Tk 1200.
Shrimp was selling at Tk 500- Tk 600 against Tk 700 a week ago, market sources said.
Different sweet water fishes also witnessed the same trend. Sweet water fishes such as ruhi was selling at Tk 250, katla Tk 250-Tk 300 per kg and poya Tk 200-Tk 220 per kg, pangas Tk 90 - Tk 110 per kg. Other local fishes including puti, tengra, magur were selling at prices between Tk 240 to Tk 300 per kg on an average.
Prices of different brand and non-brand sugar were up and was selling at Tk 60 per kg against the previous price Tk 48- 52 per kg.
Besides, potato witnessed an upward trend by Tk 2 and was selling at Tk 30 against the previous rate at Tk 28 per kg a week ago.
Prices of ginger and garlic witnessed the same trend at the retail level. The local and imported Chinese varieties were selling at Tk 85 per kg against the previous price Tk 80 per kg. Similarly garlic was selling at Tk 80-Tk 120 per kg.
According to retail traders in the city's different rice markets, prices of fine varieties were up by Tk 2- Tk 4.
'Minicate' was selling at Tk 33-Tk 35 against previous Tk 30- Tk 32 and 'Nazirshail' at Tk 42- Tk 45 against Tk 38 per kg on an average last week.
On the other hand coarse varieties of rice including BR-28 were selling at Tk 26- Tk 29 against Tk 22-Tk 24 per kg, Pari Tk 26 and Swarna Tk 24- Tk 26 per kg on an average at the city's retail level.
Imported Indian onion was selling at Tk 24 per kg. But a kilo of local onion was selling at Tk 38 -Tk 40 per kg.
In the past week, prices of different brands and non-brand edible oils maintained the same trend.
Non-brand edible oil such as palm oil, super palm, and soybean was selling at Tk 70- Tk 80 on an average.
During the last week, prices of different brands of edible oil such as Rupchanda, Teer, Pushti in five litre cans ranged between Tk 400 and Tk 420 on an average.
Traders said retail prices of local lentil were up in the city markets. On Friday, a kilo of local lentil sold at Tk 114 against at Tk 112.
Imported Nepalese and Turkish varieties were selling at Tk 100- Tk 112 which was Tk 100 per kg previously.
Prices of most common iftar items like chola, puffed rice (muri), flattened rice (chira) witnessed a downward trend.
Chickpeas vastly consumed during Ramadan was selling at Tk 46-Tk 48 against Tk 50 a kg previously, lentil (khesari) at Tk 58- Tk 60 a kg, beshon (powdered pulses) at Tk Tk 40- Tk 60 against Tk 45- Tk 70 per kg previously, muri at Tk 48-Tk 50.
Market sources said prices of eggs decreased as government allowed import of the item and were selling at Tk 24- Tk 25 for a foursome.
Prices of poultry birds increased while beef continued the same trend. Poultry birds were selling at Tk 120 against Tk 110 per kg on an average.
A kilogram of beef was priced at Tk 220and mutton Tk 300- Tk 350 per kg on an average at the city's retail outlets.
The prices of various vegetables were the same. On Friday, some vegetables including okra were selling at Tk 38- Tk 40, brinjal at Tk 40 per kg.
Green chili was selling at Tk 60 against the previous price of Tk 80 per kg in the city's retail markets.
Tomato was selling at Tk 60, cucumber at Tk 30, carrot at Tk 80 and potal at Tk 28, papaya Tk 16 and bitter gourd at Tk 30 per kg on an average in the retail outlets.
Fruits also maintained the same trend. A good size banana was selling at Tk 6. per kilo prices of apple were Tk 120 to Tk 140, grapes at Tk 240, dates at Tk 120, malta at Tk 140 per kg. Poor man's apple guava cost Tk 8- Tk 10 a piece.
