RAJSHAHI, Sept 13: The price of sugar is gradually increasing day by day in the northern region like elsewhere in the country.
Sugar is now being sold at the local markets at Tk 56-57 per kilogram, whereas the price was Tk 35-36 per kg even a few days back. The wholesale traders are apprehending that the price might increase even higher during the holy Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
On the other hand, officials of the government sugar mills said they are still selling sugar to the traders at Tk 33 per kg. Besides, private sugar mills are supplying sugar in the market at Tk 39 per kg.
However, because of the middlemen, the local wholesalers are not getting sugar at fair prices. As a result, the wholesalers are selling sugar at higher prices to the retailers that is increasing sugar price in the market, traders said.
