Prices of garlic and sugar showed an upward trend while those of rice and vegetables decreased in the city's kitchen markets, traders said Friday. Rice prices cooled off in the city's kitchen markets mainly due to the arrival of fresh varieties, according to traders. Minicate was selling at Tk 44-48 against Tk 47-50 per kg and Nazirshail was selling at Tk 45-52 per kg last week. Prices of medium and coarse rice also witnessed a downward trend by Tk 1-2 per kg. Paizam was selling at Tk 36-40 per kg, Guti at Tk 35-37 per kg, BR 28 at Tk 40-42 per kg and IRRI at Tk 30 to Tk 34 per kg. Sugar traders said temporary halt of few refiners due to machinery repair and selling of the product to beverage companies at a high rate pushed the sugar prices up, creating an artificial crisis in the market. On Friday unpacked sugar was selling at Tk 62 per kg which was at Tk 58-60 per kg last week and the packed variety ranged between Tk 65 and 66 per kg. Prices of other spices except onion and garlic remained its previous trend in the city's kitchen markets. The imported variety of onion was selling at Tk 24-26 per kg and the local one was selling between Tk 26 and 28, which was Tk 24-25 per kg last week. The imported garlic was selling at Tk 150 per kg, up by Tk 5 per kg and the local variety ranged from Tk 85 to Tk 90 per kg last week. Ginger ranged between Tk 80 and Tk 90 per kg last week. Edible oil also maintained its high trend in the city's kitchen markets. Loose soybean was selling at Tk 114-115 per kg, palm oil at Tk 98 to Tk 104 and super palm at Tk 106 per kg. One-litre container was selling at Tk 116, while two-litre container was Tk 228 last week. A can containing five litres of brand soybean oil such as Rupchanda, Teer and Pusti was selling between Tk 570 and Tk 580. Unpacked flour (Atta) was selling at Tk 28 per kg and the packed variety at Tk 33 to Tk 34 per kg. Unpacked refined flour (Maida) was selling at Tk 34 to Tk 35 per kg and packed Maida at Tk 38 to Tk 39 per kg last week. The price of four pieces of farm eggs was Tk 24 to Tk 26. Local lentil was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 105 per kg depending on its quality. Prices of vegetables decreased except potato and papaya while that of fish remained more or less steady in the city's kitchen markets. 'Brinjal' was selling at Tk 20-25, 'patal' at Tk 20, tomato at Tk 30, green chili at Tk 20-25, potato at Tk 11-12 from Tk 10, papay at Tk 20 from Tk 14, bitter gourd at Tk 20-30, sweet pumpkin at Tk 16-20, ladies finger at Tk 16, spoge gourd at 20 per kg last week.
