Sugarcane crushing starts in state-run mills

Sugarcane crushing season began in the state-run mills on Friday with a production target of 127,000 tonnes for 2014-15.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu formally inaugurated the crushing programme in Mobarakganj Sugar Mill in Jhenidah and Keru and Co (BD) Ltd in Darshana, Chuadanga as the chief guest.
During the inauguration programme at Keru and Co he said the government has taken various steps to make the sugar mills profitable by diversifying their products.
According to the steps, sugar will be produced from sugar-beat of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill, electricity will be generated from bi-products of North Bengal Sugar Mill during off-season, and 40,000 tonnes of refined sugar will be produced annually from raw sugar.   
"The state-run Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) will turn into a profitable one once these projects are implemented," the minister hoped.  
Managing director of the mill Azizur Rahman chaired the programme, while whip of Jatiyo Sangsad Solaiman Haq Joarder and lawmaker Ali Asgar Tagar also spoke, among others, on the occasion.
