RANGPUR, Oct 4: Sugarcane cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers of Rangpur district. According to sources of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) a total 7,400 hectares of lands have been brought under sugarcane cultivation in 4 Upazilas of Rangpur district this year with a production target of 3,36,200 metric tonnes.
Sugarcane cultivation is gradually increasing not only in mill zone areas but also in others areas of the district because sugarcane farming is more lucrative compared to other crops, sources also said.
Anisur Rahman (46), a sugarcane grower of Mithapukur upazila under Rangpur district told growers in this area usually cultivate local variety of sugarcanes. The production of sugarcane is per hectare 48 metric tonnes, the production could be doubled if modern technology would be applied, he added.
Many sugarcane growers of Mithapukur Upazila said as they are deprived of getting fair price of their produces, they are compelled to produce molasses by the sugarcane during the peak season of sugarcane crushing. The molasses is being sold here at Tk 30 to 35 per kg.
Growers also complained that owing to lack of transportation facilities in rural areas they had to sell their produces to middle men at lower prices.
