TANGAIL, Sept 19: Farmers have started earning a substantial profit from sugarcane cultivation in Tangail district in recent years, sector insiders and official sources said.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Tangail, farmers of the Alongjani riverbank area cultivated best species of sugarcane.
DAE sources said the farmers have an aversion to crushing sugarcane to prepare molasses.
A farmer named Anwar Hossain of Lal Hara village under Delduar upazila said sandy soil is suitable for sugarcane cultivation.
"I've cultivated sugarcane on 50 decimals of land and am expecting a bumper production of the crop if there occurs no natural disaster," he added.
Sub-assistant of DAE, Tangail Nargis Akhter said two varieties of sugarcane are being produced here-one is 'Piashi' and another is 'Misridana'.
Farmers of the area like crushing 'Piashi' variety for preparing molasses while they like 'Misrdana' variety to sell as cut-pieces as they get more profit from it, she added.
The DAE, Tangail and farmers are expecting a good production of the crop as in the current season due to favourable weather condition sugarcane has grown well in the district.
