NOAKHALI, Nov 23: The much cherished helipad which was proposed to be established at a place in Sullukia under Subarna Char upazila on the north of Noakhali has not yet been materialised after ages while all the lands taken over for it has been occupied by the land grabbers.
According to the source, when in 1969 the whole southern region of Noakhali district was hit by natural havoc like cyclone and tornado and wiped away uncountable peoples' life and property into the sea, the authority concerned took initiative to establish a helipad at Char Sullukia to aid them in their critical moment of natural disasters.
However, with this end in view, the government acquired 16 acres of land in 1993. At the initial stage, under the supervision of Noakhali Sorak "O" Janapath Department with a runway for the helipad was constructed. But for unknown reason, the remaining 80 per cent of the work was stopped abruptly.
At present most of the area of the helipad ground went under the occupation of miscreants. The runway was damaged badly while goats and cows graze there.
The building of the port was broken down and its bricks and other materials were stolen by the people.
Though some years ago the higher authority thought over the implementation of the project and the southern people were much hopeful of seeing their long cherished helipad station here, it has not been done till now.
The people of Noakhali urge the authority concerned to come forward to implement the project for the well-being of the southern people so that they may not have to perish in any devastation like that in 1969.
