Various kinds of summer fruits have started pouring in the city markets and the prices are higher than expected. City's fruits sellers of different areas told the FE Monday though the most succulent fruit for summer season-mangoes which are produced in the country did not hit the fruit corners. Indian and Pakistani mangoes are seen in plenty in the markets. A survey in city's Mirpur, Newmarket, Karwan Bazar and Motijhil area shows that imported mangoes from India and Pakistan offer an appealing look specially to rich people, are selling at higher price than that of the previous season. Indian mangoes are being sold in the city between Tk 100 and Tk 140 per kg but in the last season Indian mangoes were sold between Tk 80 and Tk 110, Shazu ,a fruit seller of New Market area said. Pakistani mangoes are selling from Tk 160 to Tk 200 per kg but the corresponding period of last summer, Pakistani mangoes were sold at Tk 150, he said. Though locally produced mangoes of greater Rajshahi did not hit city's markets, mangoes from Satkhira district occupied the market and are selling from Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg. Another juicy fruit of this time, lychee produced at Sonargaon of Dhaka are being sold at a forbidden price of Tk 500 to 550 per hundred. When Rajshahi and Dinajpur varities of lychee will hit the market, the prices would come down, the sellers said. As another most juicy fruit for summer season, water melon is likely to disappear from the markets by the end of this month (May), water melon is selling between Tk 130 and Tk 250 depending on size. Pine-apple in the market is selling between Tk 30 and Tk 60 per piece depending on size and wood apple is being sold from Tk 40 to Tk 70 depending on their look and size. Kashmiri and Australian grapefruits are selling at Tk 120 and Tk 200 respectively. Pear is being sold at Tk 140 per kilogram. Sabeda is being sold at Tk 100 per kilogram. Pomegranate is selling at Tk 400 per kilogram and grape is being sold in the markets at TK 250 per kilogram. Papaw, another favourite fruit in this season is selling from Tk 50 to Tk 200 per piece depending on size. Asif and Miran, wholesalers of city's Kawran Bazar told the FE that as the transport cost and import cost are high, so are the fruit prices.
