FE Report
Summit Power Ltd (SPL), a private enterprise, will launch a pilot project to provide solar energy to meet the electricity demand of the ultra poor people living in 'char' areas of Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.
Summit Power Limited, which produces a total of 300 MW, has decided to partner with Friendship to make successful the project named Friendship Summit Energy Project (FSEP) for helping the country's poor nomadic people living in 'chars'.
Under the project some selected families of four 'chars' of the districts will get power in the first phase while another cluster of people will get power in the second phase. Most of the population in these areas survive on subsistence farming and will not have access to reliable electricity in the next 10-15 years.
The project duration is five years after which the solar panels will be completely paid for and will be owned by the community.
Friendship, an organisation working with the poor living in the 'chars' and river-belts of the country, will implement the project. Summit will provide Tk 1.0 million for the first phase.
The goal of FSEP is to provide a holistic solution to 200 'char' dwellers through providing electricity to them and creating demand for productive uses of electricity.
