Sunday as weekly holiday
Tuesday, 25 August 2009
FOR making Fridays and Saturdays the weekend, Bangladesh remains cut off from the rest of the business world for three consecutive days. As a result, business activities or transactions come to a halt for three consecutive days or nearly a half of a week. It seriously affects the progress or productivity of businesses. For three days at a stretch, business operators get no service from banking, insurance, customs and other vital supportive services.
The government needs to appreciate the problem. It ought to take the suggestions the business community gave time and again in this regard. A government only earns gratitude and appreciation by responding to the legitimate grievances of important sections of the population. And the businessmen suggested not to serve their narrow interests but keeping the national economy in view. Therefore, it deserves a swift response from the government.
Countries such as Malaysia and Pakistan maintain only one day weekly holiday on Sunday. Therefore, Bangladesh would do well by declaring Sunday, the weekly holiday. The holy Koran urges Muslims to spread out into the world to work as soon as the prayers are over. Therefore, there would be nothing inconsistent with Islam in making Sunday the weekly holiday.
Besides, a one-day weekly holiday would help raise our gross domestic product (GDP). The more we work, the more we will raise our GDP. GDP cannot rise from working less or having two weekly holidays to reduce the working time each week.
