BAGERHAT, May 9 (UNB): The salvage of the sunken fertilizer-carrying cargo vessel from the Bhola River in the Sarankhola range of the Sundarbans West Zone appears uncertain as none of the authorities concerned could say who would salvage it and when.
Sundarbans east zone Sharankhola range assistant conservator of forest (ACF) Kamaluddin said he talked to the representative of the vessel owner over phone who said that they visited the spot but could not say who would rescue the sunken vessel.
Joint director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Khulna, AKM Abul Bashar said as the cargo vessel sank far from the main channel, the vessel owner would have to salvage it. "But they have not responded yet despite repeated calls for removing it," he added.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department engaged 15-16 workers on Saturday to remove part of the remaining fertilizers from inside the sunken vessel with a dredger machine, said Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Sundarbans East Zone departmental forest officer and member secretary of the inquiry committee formed by the Environment and Forest Ministry.
