Suranjit terms B Chy's proposal on nat'l govt anti-constitutional

Wednesday, 17 October 2007

Awami League (AL) presidium member Suranjit Sengupta has said he neither accepts the former President Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury's proposal for a national consensus government nor does he reject it.
But he termed the initiatives in forming a national consensus government as anti-constitutional, saying that no national consensus government is possible under the framework of the country's Constitution.
While talking to reporters at his residence in the city Friday after returning home from a three-month trip to Canada and United States, he said the proposal by B Chowdhury is good as a concept but floated at a wrong time, reports UNB.
He said former African President Nelson Mandela had formed a national consensus government under a legal framework but Bangladesh's Constitution does not permit such a government.
"After general elections the leader of the majority party may take initiative for forming a national consensus government. But it is not possible before the general elections," the AL leader, who is known as a reformist, said.
Responding to a query about Truth Commission, the former lawmaker said Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed will have to announce its formation and clarify its motive.
About internal conflict within the party, he said there is no dispute in AL and the party is united under the leadership of Zillur Rahman.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters about consensus government expelled BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said a national consensus is essential ahead of elections on some political issues like parliament boycott and hartal.
He said a consensus government can be formed if all political parties agree on it ahead of the election otherwise it is not possible after the election.
