SUST authorities trash BCL claim

The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has rubbished the claim of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) that the university authority was responsible for Thursday's clash on the campus that killed one. Rejecting BCL's claim, Vice-Chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan on Sunday said only Chhatra League was to be blamed for the incident. A clash among 2 rival groups of the SUST unit of BCL on its campus in Sylhet left a student dead and 60 other people injured. Amid criticisms, central BCL President HM Bodiuzzaman Shohag at a TV talk-show on Friday blamed the SUST authorities for the clash. Earlier on the same day, he told a press briefing, ‘In a university, students of that institution will only take part in its political activities. Why should outsiders come at the campus? And why should be Chhatra League blamed for it?’ At another press conference on Saturday afternoon, BCL leaders of Sylhet metropolitan and district units also held negligence of the university administration responsible for the deadly clashes. Police recovered a firearm and 19 machetes from the house of a BCL leader in Sylhet city on Thursday night after the clash. But they could not nab the leader named ‘Shiplu’, the main suspect behind Thursday’s mayhem. SUST Proctor Himadri Shekhar Roy directly held the 2 BCL factions responsible for the incident that forced the authorities to close the university for an indefinite period. He said Thursday's clashes took place over taking control of the residential halls and to acquire illegal benefits. 'The administration can't be blamed for that.' Rejecting BCL's claim, he said 'Their organisation is not disciplined,' according to a news agency.
