Sustainable irrigation for ecological stability

Monday, 21 October 2024

As an agrarian nation, Bangladesh heavily relies on irrigation as a vital source of water for agricultural activities. The predominant use of fuel-based irrigation methods poses significant environmental and economic challenges. According to a 2023 report, diesel powers a staggering 1.2 million pumps, while only 0.43 million of them operate electrically. A mere 2,659 pumps utilise sustainable and renewable energy sources, representing a disproportionately small fraction of the total irrigation infrastructure (2022). In recent years, Bangladesh has faced mounting difficulties related to climate change, such as rising sea levels, severe weather occurrences, and disturbances in agriculture. It is, therefore, crucial to prioritising the implementation of environmentally sustainable technologies in order to strengthen our ability to thwart these looming dangers.
As the majority of farmers depend on unsustainable irrigation methods, the implementation of Solar Irrigation Pump (SIP) systems offers a hopeful resolution. As per the Asian Development Bank's recommended roadmap, the implementation of SIPs might result in a substantial yearly reduction in one million tonnes of diesel fuel consumption, as well as a comparable decrease in three million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. This change is in line with our dedication to advancing sustainable technology for enhancing climate resilience.
Sustainable technologies, such as solar power, wind energy, and energy-efficient practices, provide viable methods for reducing the negative impacts of climate change. By adopting these technological advancements, Bangladesh can reduce carbon emissions, decrease dependence on limited energy resources, and establish the groundwork for an environmentally friendly and enduring future. Allocating resources to renewable energy infrastructure not only generates employment opportunities but also reduces future energy costs and enhances energy sustainability. In addition, promoting sustainable farming practices and environmentally conscious industries may protect our natural resources and improve the resilience of local communities.
We need to forge our commitment together to promoting the adoption of sustainable technologies. Together, we have the ability to build a nation that is both environmentally sustainable and resilient. Such sustainability alone can ensure the prosperity for future generations.
