Sustainable land management stressed to ensure food security

Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser (CA) for Environment and Forests Raja Devasish Roy Wednesday laid emphasis on a sustainable land management to ensure security of food, water and energy, reports BSS.
The special assistant said the government has been working for a time-befitting and effective land-using policy under the 'Sustainable Land Management Project' with the assistance of UNDP and the participation of all ministries and concerned departments.
Devasish Roy was addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a daylong workshop on 'Capacity Building for Sustainable Land Management and Use of Resources' at the Environment and Forests Ministry.
UNDP Country Director Stephen Priesner was present at the function as the special guest.
With Environment and Forests Secretary AHM Rezaul Kabir in the chair, the function was addressed by Joint Secretary of the Ministry and project director of 'Sustainable Land Management Project' AM Mustain Billah.
The special assistant said a long-term economic benefit and expected development was possible if we could ensure use of land suitable for environment.
He said excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, reduction of biodiversity, desertification of forests and water-bodies, urbanisation, rampant land use for infrastructure development were the main barriers to a sustainable land management.
Besides, Devasish Roy, said land and water pollution, seasonal drought, waterlogging, unplanned land use for shrimp cultivation and hill-razing are creating massive impact on environment.
