Sweet gourd cultivation for char landers suggested

GAIBANDHA, Oct 20: The agri experts in a function Tuesday urged the river basin extreme poor people to cultivate pumpkin (sweet gourd) on the nearby fallow char land on a large scale to get desired production and its economical benefit to change their socio-economic conditions for self reliance.
"Sweet gourd cultivation can also help solve the seasonal poverty like situation of the growers at the months of Ashwin and Kartik of Bangla year by selling their stalked products produced earlier in the char land with minimum cost", they said.
The agri experts made this observations while addressing the inaugural function of a 2-day long training for the beneficiary members on sweet gourd cultivation in the char land, organised by Practical Action Bangladesh (PAB) and its partner organisation OVA at Gobardhan area under Mohiskhocha Union of Aditmari Upazila of Lalmonirhat District on October 19 under PFP-shiree project funded by DIFD and GOB.
The aim of the training was how to cultivate the sweet gourd in the char land successfully and get its expected output within a few months aimed at eradicating their poverty and hardships.
Upazila agriculture officer M. Hamidur Rahman attended the function as the chief guest.
With Deputy Manager (Operation) of PFP-shiree project M. Mizanur Rahman in the chair, the inaugural session was also addressed, among others, by district coordinator of the project AKM Ferdous and Agriculture Coordinator Nirmal Chandra Bepari.
A total of 80 extreme poor people are taking part in the training.
Talking to the FE agriculture coordinator of the project Nirmal Chandra Bepari said a total of 1472 acres of char land of 6400 extreme poor living on the embankment of Teesta and Brahmaputra river basins of four northern districts- Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Gaibandha would be brought under sweet gourd cultivation this year with the production target of 17,500 metric tons of sweet gourd.
The growers would also be provided all kinds of technical support, inputs and need base training from the project, he also said.
