Sweet potato growers in Rangpur expect good yield

RANGPUR, Jan 02: The growers of sweet potato in the district are expecting a good yield of their produce during the current season as a congenial weather condition has been prevailing across the region.
Sweet potato is cultivated in plenty at village Char Nazirdaho, Char Pallimari, Char Prannath, Char Chatura, Char Rajib, Hasbatkhaon, Gonai Char and some other areas in Kawnia upazila and Mahipur, Char Morneya and many other places of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur, DAE sources said.
The growers of the crop under the region have been getting an excellent output of their produce for the last several years which is encouraging them to enhance its cultivation across the region.
Due to handsome profit peasants are getting interested in the cultivation of sweet potato than the cultivation of some other crops, sources said.
Harun Mia, a farmer in Char Pallimari village under Kawnia upazila told this FE correspondent that he cultivated sweet potato on 20 decimals of land during this season and the condition of its growth is satisfactory.
Last year he earned huge profit from the sale of the vegetable produced in his land, he added.
Nuru, another grower of village char Mahipur under Gangachara upazila told The Financial Express that farming of sweet potato is more lucrative than cultivation of paddy, wheat, maize and other crops.
He said that cultivation of the crop has brought financial solvency to the farmers of different areas under the region in recent years.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur, official sources said the peasants under the district have been earning good profit through farming sweet potato in recent years.
Satisfactory prices as well as huge demand have encouraged the cultivators to cultivate sweet potato on a large scale, sources further said.
DAE is also giving the growers adequate advices in this regard so that they can get predictable output of their produces, sources added.
