Sweet potato starts appearing in Nilphamari market

NILPHAMARI, Jan 23: Newly-harvested sweet potato has started appearing in the local markets across the district.
Sweet potato grows well in high and semi high sandy char area. It requires low production cost.
DAE sources said cultivation of sweet potato is increasing year on year for its high production. Poor char dwellers are coming out of the poverty trap by growing the item.
Anwar Hossain, a farmer of Sonarai union under of Damar upzala said he harvested sweet potato from 30 decimals of land and got 80 maunds of production. He sold all of his produce at Tk 40,000.
Akthar Ali, a resident of a char area of Buri Teesta, said he harvested the item from 30 decimals of land. He achieved 80 maunds of output and sold all of it at Tk 45,000.
DAE sources said this year sweet potato was grown on 306 hectares of land, while the production target was 500 tonnes.
