Switzerland Embassy arranges programmes to mark grand opening of Euro 2008

The Embassy of Switzerland in Dhaka has arranged some exciting programmemes to celebrate the Euro 2008 Football Championship beginning tonight in Switzerland, reports UNB.

Ambassador of Switzerland Dr Dora Rapold launched the programme at a press conference at the Goethe-Institute in the afternoon. Director of the Institute Torsten Oertel and Deputy Head of the Embassy Elisabeth Boseh Maliner were present.

Two countries-Switzerland and Austria-are co-hosting the 16-team World's third largest sporting carnival-European Football Championship'2008. Host Switzerland meets Czeck Republic in the opening match at 10pm (BST) at the St Jakob Park in Basel.

Addressing Rapold said his country is fully prepared for holding the event and expressed hope the world focus will be on the European Football Championship. It begins with the slogan "Discover the past"

Four Swiss cities-Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich-will host 15 matches out for 31 and Switzerland, hosing the major sporting event after more than 50 years since the Football World Cup in1954, is expecting about 1.4 million foreign guests during the meet.

The daylong programmeme here includes live telecast of matches through giant screen, children film show, movies, quiz, games and other activities like face painting etc at the Goethe-Institute at Dhanmondi and German Club at Gulshan.
